A Discussion: See the Forest for the Trees

How does a photographer develop a unique style? Does it require years and years of careful refinement? Does it grow out of the photographer’s personality, beliefs, view of the world? How does a young photographer respond to the works of a master – does one imitate them? reject them? or both at the same time?

Recently, we have seen major exhibitions here and abroad highlighting Daido Moriyama’s style (HKIPF 2012) and influences (Tate Modern’s Klein & Moriyama Retrospective .) Meanwhile, the photography scene has grown increasingly interested in “found” or automatically-produced images, such as in Michael Wolf’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, where he solely uses photographs from the automatic cameras of Google’s Street View, and Andreas Gursky’s Ocean series based on satellite images of the earth’s surface. These developments call into question the very meaning of “style,” “individuality,” and the role of the photographer.

Please join us for an afternoon of community discussion in English and/or Cantonese. Attendees will be allowed to take a piece of the exhibition home for free. Refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP as space is limited.

Date: Sunday, 18 November 2012

Venue: The Photocrafters

A Series of Unfortunate Events
