A Discussion: See the Forest for the Trees

How does a pho­to­grapher develop a unique style? Does it require years and years of careful refinement? Does it grow out of the photographer’s per­son­ality, beliefs, view of the world? How does a young pho­to­grapher respond to the works of a master – does one imitate them? reject them? or both at the same time?

Recently, we have seen major exhib­i­tions here and abroad high­lighting Daido Moriyama’s style (HKIPF 2012) and influ­ences (Tate Modern’s Klein & Moriyama Retrospective .) Meanwhile, the pho­to­graphy scene has grown increas­ingly inter­ested in “found” or automatically-produced images, such as in Michael Wolf’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, where he solely uses pho­to­graphs from the auto­matic cam­eras of Google’s Street View, and Andreas Gursky’s Ocean series based on satel­lite images of the earth’s sur­face. These devel­op­ments call into ques­tion the very meaning of “style,” “indi­vidu­ality,” and the role of the photographer.

Please join us for an after­noon of com­munity dis­cus­sion in English and/or Cantonese. Attendees will be allowed to take a piece of the exhib­i­tion home for free. Refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP as space is limited.

走出森山座談會

一個攝影家怎樣建立他獨特的風格? 是否經過不間斷地追求作品的精緻度而成? 還是從他本人的性格, 信念和世界觀等沈積而來? 透過觀摩大師的作品,年輕的攝影師該怎樣與其共處? 應當拒絕, 專崇還是兩者兼容?

近日有見本地和海外的展覽紛紛展出日本攝影大師森山大道的作品(香港國際攝影節2012 / 倫敦Tate Modern) , 可見其風格具有相當的影響力。同時, 攝影界對「探索, 隨機拍成的影像等題目的興趣日益濃厚, 以Michael Wolf 的其一系列 A Series of Unfortunate Events 為例, 攝影師以相機自動拍成的Google 街景為完成品, 亦有Andreas Gursky的 Ocean系列, 以裝置在衛星導航上的鏡頭拍成的地球表面。這些例子正正傳播著「風格」,「獨特性」的意義, 更是反映著攝影師作為拍攝者的角色。
